About Kalab

Kalab Bumbaugh was born and raised in the DMV area where he grew up with an American father and Ethiopian mother with a strong influence from the  Ethiopian culture. He is an illustrator and character designer who is inspired by his love from his Ethiopian heritage to sports, superheroes, and even giraffes.

When creating illustrations or character designs he evokes a sense of movement as well as a story drawing the viewer into a world to get lost in. With his artwork, he draws attention to Ethiopian culture and illustrates the importance of how integral things like food, natural life, and cultural storytelling are in Ethiopia. He also makes it his goal to focus on bringing out the inner child in all of us and letting creativity roam free through scenes of lightheartedness, fantastical moments, and excitement. This is complemented by his use of striking saturated color palettes and his extreme use of exaggeration of figures and perspective.

Kalab's main medium of choice is digital but has a soft spot for colored pencils as well. He has also begun to add sculpting to his repertoire as a way of developing a stronger sense of form and plans on using sculpting as a medium to bring his characters to life in a physical form. Kalab looks to contribute his expertise into the entertainment industry where he would continue to push the boundaries of telling stories through a different point of view influenced by a different culture and audience.
